What is an XML sitemap?

XML stands for Extensible Markup Language (XML), in technical terms. It is a standard file format readable by the user, consumable by search engines and other data-munching applications such as feed readers.

A Sitemap XML is, in the simplest of terms, a document that lets Google and other major search engines understand your website better when browsing it.

It lists a site's URLs (pages) in a structured way allowing you (the webmaster) to provide detailed information for each URL.

It varies from details such as:

 whenever the page was updated

 How often does it change

how it applies to other site URLs

It is a level of importance to the web as a whole, etc.

Why are XML sitemaps so important?

XML is particularly crucial if: your website is not well organized or well linked (internal links)

If The site is new and hasn't many external links.

Some pages are flexibly developed on your site (as is the case with some eCommerce websites).

Your site is extensive and has a lot of archived material that might not be well-linked. An example is a user-generated content site, such as job boards, whose posts will be archived (and forgotten) after some time.

Your website is just an ordinary website, but the search engines are diligent in indexing it correctly.

XML maps could also be helpful when optimizing search engines (SEO).

Step #6: Next, continue to your website's root directory and put the sitemap.xml file in the root folder for the domain. If several sitemaps are co-opted in a sitemap.zip file, unpack it and add all sitemap files to your website's root directory.
