Rank Tracking Tools: Which One Should You Actually Use?
We have used seven rank tracking tools over the past three years. Here is what each one gets right and where they fall short.
Position tracking used to be simple. You had ten blue links, you were either on page one or you weren't, and everyone saw the same results. Now rankings vary by location, device, search history, and which SERP features appear. The number a rank tracker shows you might not match what any actual person sees when they search.
That doesn't make rank tracking useless — it makes choosing the right tool and interpreting the data correctly more important.
What Good Rank Tracking Actually Tells You
The point of tracking rankings isn't to obsess over daily position changes. Individual keyword positions fluctuate naturally — a position 4 today might be position 6 tomorrow and back to 4 the day after. That's normal SERP volatility, not a signal that anything changed.
Good rank tracking reveals trends: are your positions improving over months? Which keywords are moving up vs down? Which pages are gaining visibility? Are you appearing in SERP features? This trend-level view is where rank tracking earns its value.
Tools We've Used and Our Honest Assessments
Semrush Position Tracking
If you're already using Semrush for other SEO features, their position tracking is integrated and solid. Daily updates, local tracking by zip code, SERP feature tracking, and competitor comparison are all included. The dashboard shows visibility trends clearly.
The downside: it's part of a larger (and more expensive) platform. If you only need rank tracking, you're paying for a lot of features you won't use. But if you use Semrush's other tools, the integration makes it the most convenient option.
Ahrefs Rank Tracker
Ahrefs' rank tracker provides weekly updates on their standard plans (daily on higher tiers). The SERP history feature is unique — you can see a snapshot of what the SERP looked like for any tracked keyword on any given date, including which competitors ranked where.
SERP features are tracked and reported. The interface is clean, and data export is straightforward. Like Semrush, it's part of a broader platform, so standalone rank tracking isn't a cost-efficient use of the subscription.
SE Ranking
More affordable than the big two, with daily tracking and local search support. The accuracy is comparable for most keywords. It doesn't have the depth of backlink or content analysis tools that Ahrefs and Semrush offer, but for dedicated rank tracking at a lower price point, it's a strong option.
We've used SE Ranking for clients who need rank tracking reports but don't need the full analytical capabilities of pricier tools. At around $40-50/month for a reasonable number of keywords, it's budget-friendly.
Google Search Console (Free)
Technically not a rank tracker, but the Performance report shows average position for every query your site appears for. It's free, it uses Google's actual data (not estimates), and it covers all your keywords automatically — you don't have to pre-select which ones to track.
The limitations: average position is averaged across all impressions (including personalized results and different locations), the data has a 2-3 day delay, and you can't track competitor rankings. But for understanding your own ranking trends, nothing is more accurate.
SERPWatcher by Mangools
Part of the Mangools suite, SERPWatcher offers a clean, simple rank tracking experience. It's less feature-rich than Semrush or Ahrefs but significantly more affordable. Good for freelancers and small agencies tracking a moderate number of keywords.
How We Set Up Rank Tracking
Track the right keywords. Don't track 500 keywords for a 50-page site. Focus on your primary keyword for each important page (product pages, category pages, key blog posts), plus a handful of secondary keywords. For most small sites, 50-100 tracked keywords is plenty.
Track by the right location. If you're a local business, track rankings for your specific city or region. National rankings are meaningless if your customers are in Denver. Most tools support location-specific tracking down to city or zip code level.
Track mobile and desktop separately. Rankings can differ significantly between mobile and desktop. With mobile-first indexing, mobile rankings are arguably more important, but tracking both helps you spot discrepancies.
Set up competitor tracking. Most rank trackers let you add competitor domains to see their positions for the same keywords. This context is crucial — if your ranking drops but so did everyone else's, it's a SERP change, not a site issue. If your ranking drops and a competitor's rises, that's a competitive signal.
Interpreting Rank Tracking Data
Ignore daily fluctuations. Look at weekly or monthly trends. A keyword bouncing between position 5 and 8 daily is performing normally. A keyword that was at position 5 in January and is at position 25 in March has a real problem.
Average position is more useful than individual keyword positions for understanding overall site health. If your average position across 50 keywords improves from 18 to 12 over three months, your SEO efforts are working even if no single keyword shows dramatic improvement.
SERP feature tracking matters. If you rank #1 but a featured snippet takes the top position, your effective visibility is lower than the rank suggests. Conversely, winning a featured snippet from position #4 can be more valuable than moving from position #4 to #3.
Connect rankings to traffic and conversions. A ranking improvement that doesn't increase traffic or conversions isn't meaningful. Sometimes improving from position 8 to position 5 barely changes traffic because positions 1-3 capture most clicks. Use rank tracking as one input alongside Search Console traffic data and analytics conversions.
Pick one tool, set it up properly, and check it weekly. That's all the rank tracking most sites need. The tool matters less than the consistency of monitoring and the intelligence you apply to the data. Whatever tool shows you trends over time and supports your specific tracking needs (local, mobile, competitors) is the right choice for you.
